On the eve of Independence Day, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh referred to the speech delivered by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as one of the most remarkable addresses in Indian history during the 20th century.
In a post on 'X', Ramesh noted, "After revisiting the debates of the Constituent Assembly after a long time, an almost unknown fact emerged. The meeting of the Constituent Assembly commenced at 11 PM on August 14, 1947. This historic session became immortal due to Nehru's famous speech, 'We have gambled with destiny.' It is well-known that Nehru delivered this speech following the address by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the President of the Assembly."
He further stated, "Records indicate that there was something else that occurred, which did not receive adequate attention due to the impact of that historic speech."
According to Ramesh, after Dr. Rajendra Prasad spoke, Nehru delivered an initial speech in Hindustani for about six minutes. It was only after this that he presented the nearly eight-minute 'gamble with destiny' speech in English, which became a part of history."
He emphasized, "Nehru's Hindustani speech was profoundly poetic and beautifully encapsulated the essence of 'gambling with destiny.' In itself, it stands as one of the finest speeches in Hindustani of the 20th century. Fortunately, both the written text and audio recording of this speech are available today.
